I was introduced to Irish Moss in December 2018 by my sister. I had reason to believe that I had breast cancer. After going for my first mammogram at the age of 34 and being told I had to do a biopsy, I began feeling nervous that what I was hoping was just a cyst of some sort was indeed cancer.
My sister, who had successfully lost weight and healing herself after a pretty rough cesarean, immediately sent me some Irish Moss. It was then that I began to learn everything I could about Irish moss.
Sea Moss, mostly referred to as Irish Moss in the Caribbean is a powerful super food straight from the ocean. Not only does it have powerful anti-inflammatory effects, it is packed with protein, Selenium, Iodine, Fiber, Potassium, Calcium, Magnesium, Zinc, and Phosphorus.
One of the biggest things that I learned from my research was that Irish Moss contains 92 essential minerals of the 102 minerals that our body is made up of. It is also packed with Taurine, Pectin, B-vitamins, beta-carotene, and Vitamin C! All of which promote healthy functions of the body.
Out of all the benefits that Irish Moss has, the 3 benefits that I found to be the most vital to myself and other breast cancer survivors were:
1. Rids the body of mucus
2. Speeds recovery after surgery
3. Prevents Radiation Poisoning
Getting rid of mucus in the body helps our bodies to fight off infections better. Potassium Chloride, Omega-3 fatty acids and Chlorophyll are the main nutrients that dissolve inflammation or mucus in the respiratory and lymphatic system, thus making Irish Moss a natural decongestant. Irish Moss also helps the body fight off infections and boost the immune system because it contains anti-viral and antimicrobial compounds. I rarely was sick when I drank my Irish Moss smoothies consistently, and any mom who has preschool aged children, knows how easy it is to get sick.
Irish Moss played a huge role in my ability to heal from my bilateral mastectomy. My surgeon was so impressed by the healing of my wounds that I was able to schedule my reconstruction surgery 4 months after my mastectomy. Research has shown that Irish Moss has the ability to strengthen connective tissues, and decrease recovery time associated with invasive procedures. Its many nutrients helps to rebuild and strengthen the body.
When it comes to choosing Radiation as a treatment, Irish Moss has been found to cleanse the body, due to its laxative effects, and absorbs and expels toxins associated with radiation. Since Irish Moss is high in iodine it also helps to reduce side effects caused by radiation and chemotherapy.
How I prepare my Irish Moss:
I soak a handful of dried Irish Moss in filtered water for 8-10 hours. (The Irish Moss will expand so make sure not to put too much in the pot)
I then rinse the soaked Irish Moss off and blend it into a paste, by adding water to the blender while blending.
I take 2 tablespoons of the paste and I add it to my Orgain organic plant based powder. I add almond milk, blend and drink every morning.
These are just my personal benefits from using Irish Moss. I am not a doctor or health professional. Please consult a physician before adding sea moss to your diet.
